.54 caliber, 8.875" wedge retained octagonal barrel, no S/N. Brass barrel and lock, iron cock and steel, brass furniture, walnut stock. Barrel with crossed scepter "Tower Private Proof" marks, lock marked RYAN & WATSON. 4.125" flat brass, stepped lock with pronounced teat at rear, integral waterproof fenced brass pan with internal bridle screw and roller frizzen. Sliding safety at rear of hammer. Simple brass furniture, German silver wrist escutcheon engraved with script MH. A wooden ramrod of more recent vintage is included.
The firm of Ryan & Watson operated in Birmingham circa 1799-1820 (Blackmore).
Good. Brass with a golden patina that suggests an old cleaning that has left the lock markings slightly weak, as well as the edges of the proof marks. Lock remains in original flint with a replaced top jaw screw and is mechanically functional. Bore about good, very dirty and moderately oxidized. Stock good as refinished, lightly sanded with numerous repaired cracks, including two on the counterpane and several in the forend.
