Pinback commemorating the formal issuance on January 1, 1863, of Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation which ended slavery in the Confederate States. January 1st thereafter become known as Emancipation Day in many African American communities and was celebrated annually with festivities often including song, dance, oratory, food, and prayer. Though participation in the celebrations declined after Reconstruction, Emancipation Day celebrations remained a significant part of the African American community well into the twentieth century. This rare pinback button was likely produced for an Emancipation Day celebration in 1916.
