Edmund Pietsch, 14th Regiment NYSM, Penciled Sketch of Camp Wood Headquarters

Pencil sketch on paper, 14.25 x 8.325 in. (sight), framed to 21 x 15 in., signed lower left, "Drawn by Edmund Pietsch / Member of Co. D." A split rail fence runs nearly the length of the foreground, with armed soldiers on patrol in the middle distances and numerous tents and a raised American flag positioned before a grove of trees in the background. Titled in pencil along bottom edge, "Camp Wood Headquarters, 14 Reg NYSM."

The 14th New York State Militia, also known as the 84th New York Infantry, was organized in Brooklyn in 1861. On May 18, 1861, Companies A through H left for Washington, D.C. to serve under Colonel Alfred M. Wood. The regiment camped in northeastern Virginia in defense of the capital and was soon engaged at the Battle of Bull Run. The following year, their service in Virginia continued, and members of the 14th saw action at Rappahannock, the Second Battle of Bull Run, South Mountain, and Fredericksburg. Records indicate that Edmund Pietsch belonged to the 10th Infantry Veteran Reserve Corps,  formed in 1863, so this drawing was likely completed in the field between the summer of 1861 and his discharge the following year. His former regiment went on to perform valiantly at Gettysburg, where it received an official commendation for gallantry.
