Ecclesiastical Mosaic set in Marble

American, early 20th century, a stone and glass mosaic of the Christ Child against a cross surrounded by amber marble on a solid slate backing; 44.5 x 28.25 in.

Founded in 1827, St. Paul's Episcopal Church was originally located in downtown Albany, New York on Lancaster Street. "Old St. Paul's" and the ninety surrounding blocks were slated for demolition in the 1950s to make way for a new government project, Albany's Empire State Plaza. This piece was removed from the building prior to demolition in the mid-1960s.
