Early Winchester 1886 Rifle Serial Number 72

.40-82, 26" octagonal barrel, S/N 72 (mf. ca1886). Blued and color case hardened finish, smooth walnut forend and buttstock with crescent buttplate. Standard 2-line barrel address with 2-line patent information on lower tang. Standard Model 1886 marking on upper tang. 1876 marked rear sight ladder, dovetailed Rocky Mountain front sight. Italic caliber markings, found only in earliest models.

Good. Retains no finish with a dully mottled bluish-gray patina on the receiver and pewter gray on the barrel. Mechanically functional, good bore with moderate oxidation, strong rifling and some even light pitting. Wood with wear, lightly sanded, poorly fit around the tang and with a small repaired chip in that area as well. A well used, but early production M1886 Rifle.
