[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY - CALIFORNIA]. Whole plate and half plate tintypes of a family posed outside a cabin. [Volcano, CA]: n.p., [ca third quarter 19th century].

Full plate tintype featuring a bearded man, two women, and a young boy posed outside of a wood cabin surrounded by grass and shrubbery (toning to image, with moderate to heavy scratching to surface and discoloration to edges). Penciled inscription on paper scrap adhered to verso identifies the adult male subject as "Frank Adams" and the location as "Volcano Cal[ifornia]." -- Half plate tintype featuring the same scene and subjects, posed slightly differently (toning to image, with some scratching to surface and heavy blistering to emulsion).

Volcano, California, located in Amador County, was the scene of a gold rush with the advent of hydraulic mining in 1855. The small town also boasted the first lending library in California. The historic St. George Hotel is on the National Register of Historic Places.
