First published by Edward Elder Cooper on July 14, 1888, The Indianapolis Freeman was the first illustrated African American newspaper in the United States. This issue contains a large, front page engraved portrait of Frederick Douglass headlined, “The Sage of Anacostia."

Chipping, brittle edges, corners. Light folds, with some toning at folds.
