CSA General William Barksdale, KIA Gettysburg, Salt Print

Salt print, 3 x 4.25 in. (sight), under green and gold mat, 8 x 10 in. overall, n.d., ca 1857-1859. One of only a few known views of William Barksdale in civilian clothes.

Barksdale became Colonel of the 13th Mississippi and was promoted to brigadier general in August 1862. At Gettysburg, Barksdale led a Mississippi brigade in McLaw's Division of Longstreet's Corps and was mortally wounded during the assault on Little Round Top on July 2. He died in Union captivity the next day.
