[CRIME & PUNISHMENT]. A group of two press photographs of Federal troops protecting African American defendants from lynching, comprising:

FLEMING, Bunyan (ca 1895-1927). BARD, Nathan (ca 1896-1927). Machine Guns Guard Court at Negroes Trial. -- Troops and Machine Guns Guard Negros on Trial. New York: International Newsreel Corporation, 30 April 1926.

Each 10 x 8 in. press photographs (light wrinkling). Stamped to verso with brief descriptions affixed.

Bunyan Fleming and Nathan Bard (misspelled on the versos as Dard) were accused of the rape of white woman Nell Breithaupt in Madisonville, KY. In a trial described by Arthur Barnett Spingarn as "farcical," these images capture the measures taken to prevent the threat of lynching. Although the evidence was circumstantial and Breithaupt could not identify her attackers, the two men were hanged for the crime on 25 November 1927 to a crowd of 7,000, both denying their guilt (The Cincinnati Enquirer, 26 Nov. 1927).
