.52 caliber. 32" barrel length. SN: 778. Single-shot percussion rifle with semi-buckhorn rear and front blade sights mounted atop an octagonal barrel. Barrel is browned while lockplate and hammer are casehardened. Wood furniture is curly maple with two wedge pins mating barrel to furniture. Buttstock has a cheek swell to left side, flat wrist, and a brass patchbox to right side. Top of barrel shows the later stamped "R. Southgate" signature of Royland Southgate, a maker of contemporary flintlock and percussion arms whose work contributed greatly to the revival of the "Kentucky Rifle" in the postwar years. The serial number of 778 indicates the item was made in 1968. The lock shows simple edge engraving with a simple wave marking. Hammer shows a "{Wing}" engraved on its flank along with knurling to spur. Item fitted with double set triggers.
Condition:
Good. Bore is very bright with strong rifling throughout. Overall metal finish to barrels shows some edgewear with mars and abrasions in addition to loss of finish on barrel flats. Finish worn down on nosecape. Casehardening remains visible on lock plate but shows some brown patina forming around nipple. Wood to metal fit is tight with no visible cracks and a strong pattern to the wood. Action can be cocked and released but set trigger must be depressed in order for main trigger to function.
