Commercial British Pattern 1853 Artillery Carbine by Bentley & Playfair
.577 caliber. 24" barrel length. SN: NSN. Single-shot percussion carbine with three position folding rear and front blade sights graduated to 300 yards. Blued metal finish with walnut stock showing two barrel bands and brass nosecape. Stock features a brass buttplate and stock mark reading "BENTLEY & PLAYFAIR/MAKERS" city marking illegible. Top of barrel shows commercial proofs with 25 bore markings. Lockplate features a "{Crown}" marking in addition to "1861/TOWER" mark forward of hammer. Item has a single forward sling swivel mounted but no rear swivel. Comes without cleaning rod. Barrel tang does not fit flush with cutout to stock.
Condition:
Good. Bore is dark with oxidation and patina throughout. Overall metal finish is brown patina with patches of oxidation overall. Brass furniture displays tarnish and wear. Wood stock has dings, mars, and scratches overall in addition to discolorations. Multiple screws and tang for barrel do not fit flush in stock. Action is functional.
