Lot of 40 muster rolls from the 47th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Each is signed on December 31, 1863 or January 1, 1864 with four rolls for each Company, including A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, and K. For each company there is a muster out roll for their three year service September 25, 1861 through December 14, 1863, a muster pay roll for October 31 through December 14, 1863, the reenlisted muster in rolls, and a second muster pay roll for December 15, 1863 through January 15, 1864. The rolls document the reenlistment of the regiment at the end of 1863 after they had seen action in the decisive Union victory at the Battle of Champion Hill with 143 lost from the regiment. They continued to participate in the assault on Vicksburg and the advance and siege of Jackson before being stationed in New Iberia and Algiers, Louisiana where these rolls were penned. The reenlisted veteran regiment would participate in the Red River Expedition in the spring of 1864. The muster out rolls provide many details about the soldiers, especially those who died, with the remarks filled out regarding how they perished. Each document is numbered 4 through 23 with a brief note by the paymaster J.W. Carpenter, with each number being used twice, once for the muster out or in roll and once for the pay roll.
