Hurricane Jackson

1956

signed and dated '56 l.r.

framed

18 x 22.75 in. (sight), 24 x 29 in. (frame)

This painting likely depicts the boxing match between Tommy "Hurricane" Jackson and Floyd Patterson on June 8, 1956 at Madison Square Garden, New York. Patterson won the fight by split decision after twelve rounds. Jackson and Patterson fought again in July 1957, where Jackson lost in the tenth round by technical knockout.

Clyde Singer was born in Malvern, OH and is known for his American Scene style works. After studying at the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts, he received a scholarship to attend the Arts Student League in New York City where he was mentored by Thomas Hart Benton and John Steuart Curry. In 1940 he was appointed the Assistant Director of the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, OH, where he resided for the rest of his life.

Provenance:Private collection, Canton, OH

Condition:

Spot of paint spatter near center. Speck of wood appears to be stuck to the upper right edge of canvas near frame, presumably from surrounding frame. Left and right edges show a bit more wear from rubbing against frame, and lines on bottom and slightly on top edges of canvas from pressing on stretcher. A few spots of craquelure.
