HDS indicates that A.A.C. Williams of Brunswick, Maine, enlisted as an Assistant Surgeon on 5/3/1861 and was commissioned into Field & Staff ME 1st Infantry. He mustered out of the regiment on 8/5/1861. Williams later joined the 2nd US Sharpshooters as an Assistant Surgeon rising to the rank of Surgeon in Chief. In an after battle report written by Captain Henry Dalton during the Chancellorsville Campaign, Dalton made special note of the services rendered by Williams: "My first surgeons, Drs. [George M.] Brennan and [A.A.C.] Williams, deserve special credit for the coolness displayed in going wherever the discharge of their duties, which often called them to the extreme front, demanded their presence. Dr. Williams, surgeon of my second regiment, was wounded by a ball passing through his arm, but he did not leave his duties for a moment."
