Sixth plate tintype of a grizzled private. (Surface wear along, especially along perimeter where plate meets mat, some discoloration along perimeter of plate, strong contrast.) Housed in full Union case, Belt Buckle and Chain [Berg 2-68] (chipping to corners and edges). With penciled annotation "N. Floyd" written inside case.
Studio portrait of a possible cavalryman based on the Remington revolver the subject has tucked in his belt as well as the brass hilt of a cavalry saber that he holds. The private also wears a "US" plate representing infantry, but this may have been used as a photographer's prop. A search for a cavalryman by the name of "N. Floyd" turned up Nicholas Floyd, Co. M, 6th Illinois Cavalry. However, according to his descriptive list from the Illinois Adjutant General, Floyd was 19 when he enlisted. This wild looking soldier with a rather uncomfortable demeanor looks to be older.
