Lovell Harrison Rousseau was serving in the Kentucky State Senate when the Civil War broke out. Opposing secession, he fought to maintain Kentucky's state government and himself raised two regiments of Kentuckians to fight for the Union cause. His regiments helped save Louisville from rebel takeover and he was appointed a colonel of the 5th Kentucky Infantry Regiment in September of 1861. Later that same year, he was promoted to brigadier general, and a year after that, he was promoted to major general. His war service included gallantry at Shiloh, Stone's River, and Hoover's Gap, and a successful raid on the Montgomery and West Point Railroad. After the war, Rousseau was elected to the US House of Representatives, where he notoriously beat fellow congressman Josiah Bushnell Grinnell with his cane after the two got into a fierce debate over a bill pertaining to the Freedman's Bureau.
