Civil War Request for Replacements Endorsed by Three Major Generals

2pp, 8 x 10 in., Head Quarters 39th N.Y.V.V.I., 31 Jan. 1865. From Major John Hyde, requesting additional troops to bring the unit up to strength. The 39th New York was mustered in on 28 May 1861, and veteranized in May 1864. Hughes notes: The 39th Regt NYVV left camp near Stevensburgh, Va. in May/64 with a total enlisted strength of 793 E.M. & 33 C.O. Their total now is 507 E.M. & 22 C.O. comprised in 7 companies ...Since leaving camp in May 1864 the reg't. has participated in the following named engagements:... He then lists battles and dates including: Wilderness, Po River, Spotsylvania C.H., North Anna River, Totopotomoy Creek, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Deep Bottom, Reams Station, Hatcher's Run - all between May and December. Small wonder they needed reinforcements. Docketing on verso includes Col. George von Schack, Maj. Gen'l. Nelson A. Miles (1839-1925), Maj. Gen'l. A. A. Humphreys (1810-1883) and Maj. Gen'l. George Meade (1815-1872).

Condition:Expected folds and toning along same and outer panel. Partial separation of main vertical fold. A few ink "blobs." Overall better-than-average condition.
