Printed broadside, 9 x 13 in. FESSENDEN PUSHED TO THE WALL! Broadside references C. B. H. Fessenden, co-owner of the New Bedford, Massachusetts, paper "The Mercury," and charges that at a Democratic Meeting, on the evening before the last Presidential Election, in the Democratic Head-Quarters, of which meeting he was Chairman, he said: -- "If Mr. Lincoln is Elected the South will Secede, and I tell you Gentlemen that the South ought to Secede!"
Fessenden purchased "The Mercury" in July 1861, along with co-owner William G. Baker. Fessenden was a member of the Democratic party until 1861, at which point he became a Republican. Fessenden and Baker were known to be supporters of the Republican administration and the war effort. Their newspaper was an early advocate for arming enslaved negroes and for emancipation, with editorials appearing in their paper such as "We must fight them or free them." Fessenden in particular was considered a friend to the movement advocating that blacks be free to fight, and he is credited with providing assistance to the recruitment efforts of the famed Massachusetts 54th Volunteer Regiment. The undated, unattributed broadside likely was an attempt to raise doubts about Fessenden's true political affiliations at a time when Southern sympathies were highly unpopular.
