WELLES, Gideon. Letter signed ("Gideon Welles"), as Secretary of the Navy, to David Dixon Porter. Navy Department [Washington, D.C.], 22 September 1862. 1p, 7 3/4 x 10 1/8 in. (light soil, dampstaining). Welles informs Commander Porter that “you will be assigned to duty West, and on your way report in person to this Department for further orders.” Porter assumed command of the Mississippi River Squadron on 15 October 1862, and remained at that post until July 1864.
PORTER, David D. Letter signed ("David D. Porter"), as Rear Admiral Commanding Mississippi Squadron, to John K. Myers, Acting 3rd Asst. Engr, in Cairo, IL. On letterhead of the U.S. Mississippi Squadron. 9 October 1863. 1p, 7 3/4 x 9 7/8 in. (toning at edges, creases at folds). Porter orders Myers to report to the commanding officer of the Steamer Manitou. He is to take passage in the New National. At the foot is a faint pencil note signed by Watson Smith: “Has been surveyed & recommended for discharge from service / Watson Smith Lt. Comd.”
