30.5 x 21 in. partly printed muster roll (splits at creases, repairs at edges and several creases). 

Includes listing of three officers Captain David Fraunces, 1st Lieutenant Edwin C. McFarland, and 2nd Lieutenant Orvillas Mann alongside 43 privates, all African Americans who had enlisted from Brashear City, New Orleans and Port Hudson in May to August 1863. Notation of the death of Privates Simon Dayton on March 27 and Henry Pippins on July 16. The document includes payroll for all men from the time of enlistment to the formal mustering in of the company on August 31, 1863. All the men have signed by mark, witnessed by officers.

The 7th Corps d'Afrique Infantry Regiment was organized at Port Hudson on August 31, 1863, and attached to Ullman's Brigade, Corps d’Afrique, Department of the Gulf. On November 15, 1863, General Ullman participated in a ceremony to present colors to the regiment. In an article printed in the New York Times on December 14, 1863, Ullman addressed the new African American regiment on November 18, 1863: “A few short months ago you privates were slaves, bowed in the dust of oppression and cruelty. Now, you are freedmen, soldiers of the United States, clothed in the uniform of the Union, armed with the weapons of freedom, organized under the banner of freedom, and eager to fight for your own liberties, and the salvation of this land which is alike your and our home.” The 7th Corps d'Afrique was subsequently designated as the 79th United States Colored Troops on April 4, 1864 who would see action at the Battle of Fort Smith.
