HDS indicates Joseph Swisher was 30 years old when he enlisted on 8/15/1862 as a 1st Sergeant. In November of that same year he mustered into Co. E of the 113th Ohio Infantry whereafter he received multiple promotions. He resigned on 6/5/1865 having attained the rank of Major by Brevet. The 113th OVI saw extensive action during the war, including participation in the Tullahoma Campaign, Chickamauga Campaign, Atlanta Campaign, and Sherman's March to the Sea.
