Major James Thomas Watt Hairston (1835-1908) was born in Lowndes County, Mississippi. He was an 1858 graduate of the Virginia Military Academy and at the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in the Confederate Army. HDS indicates Hairston enlisted on 5/1/1861 as a captain and was commissioned into Co. E MS 11th Infantry. He served as commandant of Libby Prison and later served as AAG on the staff of General J.E.B. Stewart for more than two years.
