Navy Department [Washington, D.C.], 28 September 1861. 1p, 7 3/4 x 9 3/4 in. (ink feathering on Welles signature, stray pencil mark on bottom right). Welles informs Foote that Captain Samuel H. Field has filed excellent recommendations along with his application for appointment as Gunner, a position from which his age excludes him. Welles indicates that, given his extensive experience in Men of War, “he might be of service to you.” -- WELLES, Gideon. Letter signed ("Gideon Welles"), as Secretary of the Navy, to Commander A.H. Foote, Commanding Gunboat Flotilla, in St. Louis. Navy Department [Washington, DC], 30 October 1861. 1 p., 7 3/4 x 10 in. (ink feathering on Welles signature, light soil). Welles writes that he is enclosing a letter [not present] from “Charles Calahan, Esq of Cleveland, Ohio.”
Andrew H. Foote was commander of the Western Gunboat Flotilla, predecessor of the Mississippi Squadron, from 1861-1862.
