[CIVIL WAR] General Orders No. 17 sentencing a black man to death by hanging. War Department, Washington, DC, 21 January 1863. 1p, 4.5 x 7 in. "Granson, or Granville," a colored man, was accused of attempted rape of Miss Louise Duferne. Although he pleaded "Not Guilty," he was found "Guilty" by a court-martial on 18 Nov. 1862 and sentenced "...to be hanged by the neck till he be dead..."
