Civil War Enquiry Endorsed by Three Union Generals, Including Hancock

1p, 8 x 10 in., Head Quarters 20 Indiana Vol. Battn., 9 Aug. 1864. From Lt. Col. George W. Meikel reporting that a portion of the regiment's mail was found destroyed in the field near 3rd Division HQ. Forwarded first with a request to investigate by Brig. Genl. Philip R. de Trobriand (1816-1897), then to Brig. Gen'l. Gershom Mott (1822-1884), with the same request. on the 29th of August Maj. Gen'l. Winfield Hancock (1824-1886) requested a detective to investigate the incident. Unfortunately, Meikel probably never learned what happened to the mail. He was killed at Petersburg less than two weeks later.
