Civil War Document Endorsed by Maj. Gen. Sheridan and Brig. Gen. Torbert

1p, 8 x 10 in., Camp of 9th New York Cav., Jordan's Pt., VA 23 July 1864. To Horatio Seymour, Governor of New York from Lt. Col. George S. Nichols (1820-1916) requesting promotion to Colonel to fill the position left vacant by the death of William Sackett (DOW 14 July 1864). Verso docketed by Col. Thomas C. Devin (1822-1878) (who writes a supporting note that is longer than the one written by Nichols originally), also dated 23 July. Approved by Brig. Gen'l. A.T. Torbert (1833-1880) and Maj. Gen'l. Philip Sheridan (1831-1888) (both on 24 July). Nichols did not become a full colonel of volunteers until March 1865, but he also received a brevet brigadier generalcy less than two weeks later.
