Image of African American with "The Innocent Cause of the War" arched over his head.
Unusual cover with two images: upper left, George Washington with "Corner Stone of the Federal Union;" upper right, African American with "Corner Stone of the "Southern Confederacy."
Two African Americans dancing "Bress de Lor, we am Contraban."
Overseer with a whip shouting "Come back you Black Rascal." The man of the family replies: No - I cant come back 'Ise Contraban.'"
"Secession Cavalry" shows white officers riding on the shoulders of African Americans.
African Americans confronting General Butler, "Contraband of War; or Volunteer Sappers and Miners from the F.F.V." With long text from the African Americans explaining that they have just come from Manassas Junction and would like to enlist.
Image of Winfield Scott with his hand around Jeff Davis' neck: "Jeff in a tight place, he wont get off "SCOTT free."
Plus two others not expressly African American; one depicting a pig rooting under a rock labeled "secession." The other an eagle with a flag and a snake with a battered Confederate flag, "Irrepressible Conflict."
As was typical at the time (and for decades after), the image of African Americans is not very complimentary. Many Northern military men found out, however, that these men made excellent soldiers and were willing to fight and die for their freedom.
