[CIVIL WAR]. Corps badge identified to J.T. Pitman, 1st Massachusetts Cavalry, XVIII Corps (Eighteenth Army Corps), with ribbon.

Silver hanger inscribed "J.T. Pitman," with badge representing the XVIII Corps, approx. 1.5 x 2 in. (light tarnish at edges). -- Silk ribbon with XVIII Corps badge printed at center surrounded by "Eighteenth Army Corps," with bullion fringe at bottom (cracks throughout ribbon, fringe separated in places). 

HDS lists a John T. Pitman who enlisted on 9/19/1861 as a private and mustered into Co. M, 1st Massachusetts Cavalry on 9/25/1861. Records indicate at the time he was a resident of Chelsea, MA, and working as a conductor. Pitman was discharged for disability on 4/29/1862 at Hilton Head, SC., but in September of the same year he returned to duty and mustered into Co. H, 43rd MA Infantry, known as the "Tiger Regiment." He was mustered out on 7/30/1863 at Readville, MA, having attained the rank of corporal. Pitman later served as member and post commander of GAR Post # 94 (Revere). He died 2/13/1912.
