In the foreground, field glasses are displayed, as well as a book propped against a forage cap. Studio imprint of Pine & Bell, Troy, NY on verso.
Subject identified as John Aiken Millard, Jr. (1843-1914) of Troy, NY. Millard joined the 1st New York Light Artillery with a second lieutenant's commission on December 29, 1864. He mustered into Battery H, which had been attached to the 5th Corps, Army of the Potomac since March of that year.
