Original publisher's green cloth, gilt spine titles (front hinge starting, stains to upper boards). Provenance: Sylvester L. Stannard (b. ca 1825) of the 178th New York Infantry (pencil inscription to front free endpaper); Essex Historical Soc. & Shipbuilding Museum (stamp to front free endpaper). 

FIRST EDITION of General Casey's infantry manual. Casey was a career Army officer who rose to the rank of major general during the Civil War. The copy is trace to Sylvester L. Stannard originally enlisted on 5/13/1861 as a corporal and was mustered into Co. G of the 31st New York infantry on 5/27/1861, mustering out on 6/4/1863. He re-enlisted on 7/11/1863 at New York City as a sergeant and was mustered into Co. K of the 178th New York on 10/17/1863. He was promoted to first sergeant on 6/1/1864, though reduced after the war back to sergeant. He transferred to Co. E (the company listed on his ownership inscription) on 2/15/1866.
