[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 6 items associated with the 10th Legion, 56th New York Regiment, comprising:

TILLER, C.W., photographer. Ninth plate ambrotype of soldier holding rifle, wearing large shield patch bearing an "X" for the 10th Legion of the 56th New York Infantry. Newburgh, NY: C.W. Tiller's Daguerreotype Gallery, n.d. (Image a bit dark, with minor spotting and very minor wear to emulsion, spotting to preserver.) Housed in pressed paper case (wear to surface including some finish loss, adhesive repair to spine. spots of discoloration). Embossed card for Tiller's gallery behind image.

Sixth plate tintype of seated soldier holding rifle, wearing large shield patch bearing an "X" for the 10th Legion of the 56th New York Infantry. N.p., n.d. (Image a bit dark, with significant abrasion to lower left, spotting to mat and preserver.) Housed in pressed paper case (wear to surface including finish loss, discoloration, some separation to spine and corners of covers, and discoloration to pad). 

Sixth plate tintype of soldier wearing large shield patch with "X" for the 10th Legion of the 56th New York Infantry. N.p., n.d. (Image dark, with heavy discoloration and some crazing throughout, with spotting to mat.) Housed in pressed paper case (fully separated at spine but held together with added fabric, wear to surface with finish loss throughout and spots of discoloration to velvet pad). 

BOGARDUS, photographer. CDV standing portrait of Colonel Charles Henry Van Wyck in uniform (some stray marks to surface, soiling to surface, lower corners of mount clipped). New York, n.d. Bogardus's imprint on verso alongside pencil inscription identifying subject.

5 1/2 x 3 1/4 in. patriotic cover autographed by Van Wyck (not postally used, but sealed, with some surface soiling and light wear to edges and corners).

2 1/4 in. lg. badge comprised of a hanger with pinback attached to a "Tenth Legion N.Y. Vet. Vols" badge with enameled insignia (some surface soiling and spots of discoloration along with surface scratching).

The 56th New York Infantry Regiment was organized in Newburgh and mustered into service in October of 1861. The regiment participated in the Siege of Yorktown and suffered losses the Battle of Seven Pines early in the war. Later engagements included the Siege of Fort Wagner, and the Battle of Honey Hill.
