5 1/2 x 3 1/4 in. patriotic cover autographed by Van Wyck (not postally used, but sealed, with some surface soiling and light wear to edges and corners).
2 1/4 in. lg. badge comprised of a hanger with pinback attached to a "Tenth Legion N.Y. Vet. Vols" badge with enameled insignia (some surface soiling and spots of discoloration along with surface scratching).
The 56th New York Infantry Regiment was organized in Newburgh and mustered into service in October of 1861. The regiment participated in the Siege of Yorktown and suffered losses the Battle of Seven Pines early in the war. Later engagements included the Siege of Fort Wagner, and the Battle of Honey Hill.
