[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 4 items associated with the Navy in New Orleans.

DEWEY, George (1837-1917). Admiral of the Navy. Clipped signature on 2.5 x 4 in. card. He helped the Union take control of the Mississippi River, being involved in the Battles of New Orleans and Port Hudson. Later, in the Spanish-American War he assisted in the capture of Manila, Philippines. 

PORTER, David Dixon (1813-1891), Admiral, only the second to hold that rank after Farragut. LS, Office of the Admiral, Washington, DC, 4 Jan. 1886. Letter of introduction for Mr. Carl Becker (artist) to the Editor of the Star. "I should be much gratified if you could assist him in what he desires." Plus 8 x 10 in. photo of Porter with U.S. Naval Institute Press label on verso and same image view in CDV. Carte with Anthony's New York backmark. Without Porter, Grant would never have been able to take Vicksburg.
