[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 4 items associated with Charles C. Coons, 44th Illinois Infantry.

Name plate, 2 1/4 x 6 1/2 in., engraved with the following: "C.C. Coons / Sergt. Co. G. 44th Ill. / Captured at Stone River Tenn. Jan. 1. 1863. / Rockton, Ill." - Ninth plate ruby ambrotype of soldier wearing kepi, housed in full case with penciled note inside case, which reads, "Barns, Rockford / Aug 1861 / C. Coon / For mother." It is unclear from the inscription if this is a portrait of Coons or a friend named "Barns." - ALS from Coons to Hon. Henry Shibly. Stevenson, Ala Aug. 27th, 1863 - GAR medal. 

Accompanied by photocopied military records. 

In the letter, Coons tells Shibly about the heat in August in Alabama. "Rosecrans and Sheridon are here making preparations for a forward movement in the direction of Chatanooga Tenn. and Huntsville Ala. The troops in this department are in good Spirits and are quite confident in the Success of our Generals." He goes on to note that the men like both of these commanders. He comments that the 44th left Chicago one thousand strong, "today we cannot muster over 400 men... So you will see what war has done to us. Sickness and battle has raised furor(?) in our ranks, but we are satisfyed to think we have done our duty."

Charles Coons enlisted in Rockford, IL as a 20-year-old farmer from Rockton, IL. He enlisted in the 44th IL Vol. Infy. and mustered out in April 1864 to veteranize. It is not clear when he mustered out of the Veteran Reserve Corps. He was wounded twice: Dec. 31, 1862 at Murfreesboro, TN. He was also taken prisoner at that time and confined at Richmond, VA. He was paroled at City Point, VA on Feb. 3, 1863 and sent to the General Hospital at Annapolis. He was wounded again at Chickamauga, Sept. 19-20, 1863.
