A rare Union occupation newspaper printed on light grey “necessity paper” due to paper shortages in the Confederacy during the Civil War. This issue contains an inside page report headed, “Arrival of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment,” with local coverage of this famous African American regiment under Colonel Robert Gould Shaw arriving for its first duty in Beaufort, SC. The 54th Massachusetts Regiment would gain fame for its heroic actions at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner in Charleston harbor on 18 July 1863.
