Cincinnati Photographers, Walter & Heuck, "Trick" Self Portrait CDV Collection

Lot of 70 CDVs, more than half by Walter & Heuck of Cincinnati, including a previously unknown civilian pose of General Ambrose E. Burnside, an albumen carte of a Lincoln engraving with Walter & Heuck's backmark, and six trick  CDVs showing men pictured with themselves.  We surmise the subjects of the trick shot CDVs to be the photographers Walter and Heuck themselves, as they appear together in a few cartes and individually on many.  The remainder are mostly vignette portraits, many hand colored, and about 20 with Swiss or German bakcmarks, including four of men in military uniform.

Most of the cartes are unidentified but penciled with an 1866 date on verso.  While General (and future Rhode Island Governor and U.S. Senator) Ambrose E. Burnside's distinctive facial hair sufficiently identifies him, it is also confirmed that he was in Cincinnati from 1863 to 1865 as commander of the Department of Ohio and from late 1865 to early 1866 serving as president of the Cincinnati & Martinsville Railroad.
