Chinese Painted Fan with Lacquer Box

Chinese, 19th century. A painted fan with carved and pierced tortoiseshell ribs, each side decorated with elaborate genre scenes featuring figures with applied silk robes and faces of painted ivory, edged in a painted floral and gilt border; housed in a gold-painted lacquer box that opens to a silk-lined interior, the lid decorated with similar genre scenes with figures composed of painted ivory faces and paint; fan lg. 10.75 in. (closed), box ht. 3, lg. 13.5, wd. 4 in.

Some loss and small tears to paper. Loss to some silk lining and one figure's face on interior of box's lid.
