Chester Nicodemus (American, 1901-1990)

American (Ohio), mid-late 20th century. A group of six Ferro-stone pieces including a raccoon, red robin, cottontail rabbit, bluebird, wren, and one Christmas ornament. All marked NICODEMUS, ornament marked 1976 / Florine / + Chester; (bluebird) ht. 5.75 in.

Educated at the Cleveland Institute of Art, Nicodemus taught at the Columbus College of Art and Design in the 1930s only to leave the school in 1941 to devote his time fully to creating his own work. Nicodemus used local Ohio clay, rich in iron which he named Ferro-Stone.
