Nelson A. Miles (1839-1925) was an American general recipient whose lengthy military career spanned the Civil War through the Spanish-American War and who served as the last Commanding General of the United States Army prior to the abolition of the office. He was forced to retire in 1903 due to the Army's mandatory retirement age. Notably, Miles received the Medal of Honor for gallantry during the Battle of Chancellorsville.
