Cased Set Of Delvigne Percussion Single Shot Pistols

120 Bore (about .34), 3.25" octagonal barrels, no S/N. Browned finish, thermoplastic grips. Single action, single shot, percussion "zip guns" with cocking levers that resemble ramrods under the barrel that can be pushed backwards to cock the striker which is formed in the shape of an armored mythical lizard's head with the curled armored tail serving as the trigger. The embossed thermoplastic grips are deeply embossed with rats in chase of the creature and read LEPAGE Fres A PARIS on the obverse and SEULS DEPOSITAIRES on the reverse. Tops of barrels marked INVon DELVIGNE in gold with the barrels lightly engraved at the breeches and muzzles with flowing foliate themes. Ramrods are stored in the bottoms of the grips. Pistols are cased in a lovely French fit period case with maroon lining that has faded to brown, apparent ebony veneer on the exterior and a brass plaque engraved HBB. Accessories include the original steel bullet mold, a miniature copper powder flask and an ebony cap container. Henri Gustave Delvigne (1799-1876) was an early experimenter long bearing surface projectiles and designed the Delvigne chamber system for French percussion military long arms, adopted prior to the Thouvenin system. He is probably best known for the Chamelot-Delvigne revolver design, the basis for the French M1873 Ordnance Revolver.

Condition:

Very good. Barrels with some traces of blue and lightly oxidized plum patina, cocking pieces and triggers bright, bores with fine rifling and scattered oxidation. Markings clear, grips fine with some light handling marks and minor mars. Case very good with some surface cracking to the veneer, interior heavily faded, accessories all about very good to fine. A lovely little set of French pistols.
