Model 1856 black patent leather body trimmed with gilt braid, bullion thread, ribbed red wool "melton" cloth top and mercury fire-gilded gold-plated fixtures. Gilded brass triangular and rayed plate bearing in silver, the Victorian crown with Prince of Wales feathers above the Royal Arms and the sphinx over Egypt below; the scroll inscribed "Dieu Et Mon Droit" resting on two sprays of rose, thistle, and shamrock intertwined. Below, on three gilt scrolls, the battle honors of Peninsula, Sevastopol, and Waterloo, the outer ends of the scrolls finish in sprays of laurel. Gold gimp and Orris cord across the 7.25" square top and down the angle sides; on the left side, a gold bullion rosette with embroidered VR cipher on dark blue velvet, behind which is a plume socket. At the waist of the helmet, a 1" wide braid of lace with two bands of narrower braid below. A similar double band of lace around the bottom of the skull. Gilded lion head rosettes on both sides, and a black velvet backed chain chinstrap of 5/8" interlocking rings, with gilt ring and hook at back of helmet. The front peak embroidered with three rows of gold purl thread, 1.25" wide. Red cocktail feather plume standing 4.5" above the top of the cap and falling 12", with a small brass ring at its top, and a gilt corded ball with upright leaves for plume socket. Interior sweatband of Swiss leather with drawstring fastening to silk, maroon liner.
The 12th and 9th Lancers amalgamated in 1960, and today are titled the 9th/12th Royal Lancers (Prince of Wales).
Purl threads of visor rubbed by chinstraps. Tarnish and wear representative of age. All parts are original and complete. Hard to find in as good condition.
