British General and 1st Viscount, Rowland Hill, Autograph Letter Signed, 1834

ALS, 2pp (4.5 x 7 in.), Home Guards, 20th Feb. 1834. Possibly to Earl of Shaftesbury. "I beg leave to acquaint you that I have directed the name of Mr. Charles Co?eus to be noted for the purchase of a Commission but... the list of candidates is far too crowded to admit of my encouraging him to expect an appointment at an early period." Signed Hill.

Rowland Hill (1772-1842) was one of Wellington's best officers. He was created Baron Hill of Almaraz and Hawkstone in 1814. When Wellington became Prime Minister, Hill moved into his former position as commander in chief.

Condition:

Ink smear in the middle of the surname of the nominee.
