.38CF (unknown cartridge), 5" octagonal barrel, S/N 846. Blued finish, checkered walnut grips with lanyard ring in butt. 6-shot, double action, top break revolver. Left side of barrel web marked 1897 over *B in a circle (Brazilian military mark) over Jules Kaufmann in an arc over Liege. Kaufmann manufactured these Gerard patent top break revolvers for the Brazilian government. Various inspection marks throughout. Action release on bottom front of frame allows the barrel and cylinder to lift up and to the rear, relying on gravity for the ejection of casings. Bore measure .357" nominally .38 caliber and references refer to this as being a ".38" as well as a ".380". Likely the cartridge was similar to the .38 S&W or British .38/200 revolver cartridge.
Good. Retains some of the period blued finish with thinning and loss, scattered surface oxidation and some surface pitting, primarily on the barrel. Markings mostly visible, mechanically functional, fair bore with pitting. Grips worn and sanded with the checkering mostly worn away.
