Brass ID Stencil Carried at Gettysburg by Benjamin F. Ramsdell, Co. D, 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry

Brass identification stencil, 2.125 x 1.125 in., reading, "R.F. Ramsdell / Co. D. 20. Me. R."

Benjamin F. Ramsdell (1835-1865), a resident of Gray, ME, enlisted as a private on August 29, 1862. He mustered into Co. D, 20th Maine Infantry, commanded by Colonel Joshua Chamberlain. During the Battle of Gettysburg, the 20th Maine held the extreme left flank of the lines of the Army of the Potomac at Little Round Top and fought against General William C. Oates's Alabama troops. Ramsdell mustered out in June of 1864 and died less than a year later, just before the end of the Civil War.
