Lot of 41 albumen photographs from "Photographic Views & Costumes of Japan, By F. Beato & Co., Yokohama." Most measure 9.5 x 11.5 in. though several in collection are smaller. Photographs originally in an album with descriptive text on facing page, but now separated. Many with title in pencil on mount recto, written in unknown hand. Nineteen of the photographs feature Beato's signature hand-colour technique.

Felice Beato (1834-1907) noted as one of the world's first war photographers, traveled widely in Asia and the Mediterranean area. By 1863 Beato opened a studio with Charles Wirgman in Yokohama, representing one of the earliest and most important commercial studios in Japan. Photographing throughout Japan during a time period in which foreign travel to and within the country was extremely limited, Beato captured images of a country few Westerners had ever visited. His documentary style lent an authenticity to his images of the Japanese people and country. Photographs in this collection include studio portraits of formerly attired men and women as well as informal portraits of men, women, and children shot in the countryside. Landscapes, temples, market scenes, residences, and more are included as well.

Expected toning on all images. Minor spotting and soil evident on some images but overall photographs in condition good. See photographs for specific images.
