Autographed CDV of Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman

With Brady imprint and 1865 copyright notice, ink signed "W.T. Sherman/Maj Genl." beneath portrait and again on verso over blue-green two cent revenue stamp.

William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) is enshrined one of the America's premier master of warfare, Southern controversy notwithstanding. Sherman's strategic grasp -- inflicting total war -- was paramount in winning the Civil War.

Sherman rose to command the United States Army in 1869 and was instrumental in creating the Command School at Ft. Leavenworth. General Sherman retired in 1884 as his own request, declined pressure to run for President, and died in New York City in February 1891. Ironically, Sherman's friend and old nemesis, Joe Johnston, contracted pneumonia at the funeral and died a short time later.
