Autographed CDV of Maj. Gen. Henry W. Slocum

With "Washington Gallery, Vicksburg" back mark, ink signed beneath portrait, "H.W. Slocum/Maj Genl."

Slocum had been colonel of the 27th N.Y. and was promoted brigadier in August 1861 and major general in July 1862. Following excellent service at Antietam, Slocum was given command of the 12th Corps that held the extreme right of the Union line at Gettysburg. Slocum's leadership was solid if not commendable, but by no stretch brilliant. Afterward, Slocum commanded the District of Vicksburg and took over the 20th Corps leading it into Atlanta on September 2, 1864. The general resigned in September 1865 and entered politics serving three terms as a New York Congressman. Slocum died in April 1894.
