Autographed CDV of Maj. Gen. George C. Meade

with gold imprint of "Alex. Gardner, Washington," ink signed beneath portrait "Geo. C. Meade/Maj. Genl. U.S.A."

The victor at Gettysburg made the mistake of allowing Lee to escape and later relinquished control of the Army of the Potomac to General-in-Chief U.S. Grant. The steadfast Meade stayed in the field and retained nominal command of the army, taking orders from Grant, and was rewarded with a major generalship at the end of the war. Inundated by the tide of operations in 1864 and never accorded the laurels he deserved, Meade died in 1872 unable to secure his role in history.

Condition:CDV is near EXC with strong corners, slightly soiled with minor mottling along margins.
