Autographed CDV of Brig. Gen. John Rawlins

By Brady, ink signed on verso "John Rawlins/Brig. Genl & Chief of staff of the/Armies U.S." John Aaron Rawlins became the heart and soul of US Grant's staff from the instant the unknown brigadier brought his close friend aboard as aide-de-camp in August 1861. As Grant's star rose so did Rawlins' and by the end of the war the Illinois native was a twice-brevetted Major General. Rawlins became Secretary of War in Grant's nepotistic administration but died prematurely of tuberculosis in September 1869.

Condition:Carte about G with bottom margin trimmed away 1/2 inch, showing wear and soiling.
