Attic Condition Colt U.S. Special Model 1861 Rifle Musket with Bayonet

.58 caliber. 40" round barrel secured by three rounded clamping barrel bands. SN: NSN. Bright finish with iron furniture and walnut stock. Single shot percussion military rifle musket. Lock marked in three lines forward of the hammer U.S./COLT'S PT FA MFG Co/HARTFORD, CT and dated 1863 at the tail. Breech with matching 1863 date and usual V/P/{Eagle Head} proof marks. Left barrel flat marked with an F.E.M. sub-inspection and stamped STEEL. Counterpane with a legible script JT (John Taylor) cartouche. Retains the original 1861 pattern rear sight, combination musket front sight and angular socket bayonet lug, both sling swivels and an original, full-length straight shank trumpet head ramrod. Reverse of butt stenciled in gold paint over black paint with the rack number E/15. Includes an original U.S. 1855 pattern socket bayonet.

Condition:

Good. Gun remains in untouched attic condition with mostly clear markings and a thickly oxidized brown patina and some lightly scattered surface rust. Mechanically functional, bore fair, dark, dirty and heavily oxidized with weak rifling. Stock dry with scattered bumps, dings and mars. Bayonet about good, with a mottled and oxidized brownish-gray patina.
