Midwestern, Probably Ohio, circa 1840s
an eight gallon vasiform watercooler with high flaring neck and wide, open mouth, with decorative tooling, and flanked by two eared strap handles, the body decorated with an incised 8 capacity mark and a spectacular spread-winged Federal style eagle clutching a leafy branch in one foot, and a stylized dog in the other, the incising highlighted with accents of cobalt, with an octagonal nut bung, the borders dashed with cobalt.
Height 21 inches.
While coolers incorporating American eagles are hardly uncommon, the graceful shape of this vessel, with its high outward flaring neck is, in our experience, unique.
Provenance:Ex. Crocker Farm, July 16, 2016, Lot 338.
Old repair to base visible in interior, involving a re-glued section of the base that had come off. Browning to side and back, chips to rim.
